ATTENTION ALL MEMBERS
Highlands Links will be hosting the 2011 Nova Scotia Junior Tournament which will be taking place between July 11- 14. With Highlands Golf Club being the host club we have been asked to provide volunteers to assist the NSGA in their efforts to run this event. The majority of the volunteer work consists of staffing the scoring table during all four days of the tournament with additional volunteers required on the first day to assist with registration. We are soliciting volunteers from our membership that may be available to assist with the running this tournament.
If you are available to assist with this tournament please sign up at the clubhouse ( sign up sheet is on the upstairs bulletin board) and indicate which day(s) you would be available. The NSGA will be hosting a meeting with all volunteers prior to the start of the tournament to go over the roles and responsibilities of our volunteers.

MEMORANDUM To: All Club Members Date: 22 Jan 2011 From: Club Executive Welcome to the 2011 golf season! Yes, the season has begun for your executive with a number of issues that need to be addressed prior to the opening of the season. Let me begin by introducing members of the executive. During the AGM of Jan 15/11 five new members were voted to your executive body. These new volunteers are Lloyd Donovan, Ken Doucette, Gary MacLean, Joe MacNeil and Keith Hawley. Unfortunately, with the torch being passed we must say goodbye to the five executive members who have worked hard on your behalf for the last several years. These retiring members are Gord Rideout, Earle Tubrett, Derrick Hawley, Carson Duncan and Michael Scott. A sincere thank you is extended to these retiring members. Returning members to the executive team are Barry MacDonald, Ervin Robertson, Terry Grant, Gary Rideout, Jill Humphries and Ruth McLagan. With your executive in place we conducted our first meeting this past week and we identified certain areas of concern that need to be addressed in the near future. The minutes of this meeting are posted on our web site and we suggest that all members take the time to review them. For those of you that have forgot, our web site address is www.cbhgolfclub.ca. John Ashton has volunteered to maintain/police our website. We encourage all members to visit our website as it’s our main forum for getting information out to you. We have agreed at the executive level to post any new information ie: minutes or announcements, in a timely fashion. In conjunction with the web site your executive has created a new email address where membership will now have the opportunity to forward any concerns or ideas they feel the executive should investigate. We don’t anticipate answering all emails but we do intend to review each and every one to see if there is some common interest or concern that is identified. This email address is cbhgolfclub@hotmail.com One of the first items on the agenda to be addressed by your executive is to find out what role the club will play with respect to our hosting of the Nova Scotia Junior tournament. This tourney will take place between July 11-15 of this year and means that 160 of the best junior golfers in the province will be at the Links, along with a supporting entourage which, will include a number of executive members from the Nova Scotia Golf Association. We fully anticipate that club support will be necessary to make this a successful event. Be prepared for a tap on the shoulder once we understand the extent of what’s required with respect to volunteers. Another item that we will be looking at over the winter are our club tournaments. Some of our tournaments are extremely successful in that they are well attended and generate significant revenue for the club. However, we do have some tournaments that have not been filled for many years and generate very little revenue. It is not the intent that every tournament need to generate a significant profit but we must understand that tee times for these events are reserved with the course well in advance and the ability of the course the resell these times on short notice is very limited. This means a lost opportunity to generate revenue. We will need to look at these tournaments over the winter and try to come up with a “fix” that will support both the club and course agendas. We have also been asked by the course to take a close look at our tee time utilization. As you are aware the club has a significant number of tee times reserved on a daily basis. A review of the data suggests that our members are using only a small portion of these times. This is especially true for the weekday times when utilization is less than 50%. These unused times get released back to the course if they are not reserved 72 hours prior to the time. This gives the course a very small window to market these times. As an executive we agree that if members are not using the allotted tee times then the course should be afforded all opportunity to use these times in order to generate revenue. Certainly, if the course can increase their revenue stream it would have a positive impact on their bottom line. We will be working closely with the course over the winter to address this situation. There has also been some negative feedback received with respect to member conduct both on the course and at the clubhouse. It’s very important that our members and course support staff work together and that any indifference not be voiced in a public forum such as at or around the course. These issues should be brought to your executive to be resolved. We can’t/won’t tolerate any behavior that impacts our membership in a negative fashion. Please remember that membership to our club is a “privilidge not a right” and all issues with respect to our code of conduct will be taken seriously. Lastly, as you are all aware the course has suffered some significant
damage as a result of the December storm. The Park continues to wait for
emergency funding in order to begin repair. At this time there has been
no word that this funding has been approved. Never under estimate the
power of the pen so a letter to your local politician to voice your concern
might be in order. In closing we welcome any ideas that you may have to offer to make our
club better. Take the time to send us an email. Please visit our website
often or talk to any member of your executive and offer input. We fully
intend to take a look at the social aspect of our club, as we seem to
be lacking in that area, so be prepared to see some new things happening
this summer. Local Rules Highlands Links Pace of Play: The maximum time to complete a round of golf at Highlands links is 4 hours and 50 minutes.
